Abstract

The rapid and easy proliferation of multimedia files in the digital world has contributed to a significant number of crimes pertaining to the illicit possession, modification, and distribution of multimedia files. The determination of authenticity of digital audio recordings is crucial to prevent misinformation spreading and is also the pre-requisite for the audio recordings to be considered as evidence in the court room. This review paper is designed to give the overview of the both active and passive techniques that exist for determination of authenticity of digital audio recordings in the literature. Besides highlighting the various anti forensic measures and the forensic techniques to counter and detect these, the paper defines the pros and cons along with the limitations of each of these techniques in real life scenarios. Thus, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive vision about the past, present and the future of authentication and thus the integrity verification of the digital audio signals.
